Day Eight - Waylon Jennings - Theme from the Dukes of Hazzard

Today was the last day of our trip and we had not really made any firm plans, other than we had to definitely get up early to watch a couple of episodes of the office before we left.  I decided to take charge of breakfast to make sure we didn't end up in a vegetarian tofu bar or whatever fruit salad based dirge the others would pick.  We loaded up the Yukon and headed for the German Town district of Nashville where Trip Advisor assured me we would find Nashville's fourth best breakfast (never go top three, they get complacent).

The restaurant in question was Monells and promised good old fashioned Southern Fayre, it did not disappoint.  On arrival we were told there would be a 45 minute wait for a table, in absentia anything else to do we decided to wait and sat on the terrace enjoying a coffee in the sun.  In actuality it was about ten minutes before we were called in to our table.  By our table I mean the table for 14 we were to share with several other groups.  The restaurant charged a flat fee per person and food was served 'family style,' which is American for in big bowls which you passed round.

Sadly there was a no cellphone rule in place which meant I could not capture the sheer quantity and quality of fried delights that were served up.  The menu included a cinnamon roll as a starter to clear the palate, biscuits and gravy (savoury muffin and some stuff a bit like bread sauce), fried apple (like apple sauce but fried), bacon, bacon in gravy (actual gravy), pancakes, grits (corn muck), grits with corn (corn muck with sweetcorn in) and to top it all deep fried chicken.  Here is us outside before slipping into a food coma:

Following breakfast we sat in the sun for a while before moving on.  I always find when I go overseas I like to visit my sister's favourite supermarket so we drove right across the city to find a branch of Trader Joes.  As if this wasn't enough of a treat we then got back into the car and headed for a shop called 'Anthropology' which I thought would be ace as the museum of Anthropology in Cambridge has got totem poles and stuff.  On arrival it was clear this was not the case here so I didn't go in.  The good news was it was near a milk shake shop so I sat in the sun enjoying a milkshake whilst my travelling companions spent what felt like two hours in the shop.

Finally with about two hours of the trip left we were allowed to do something I wanted to do, which was visit 'Cooters Place,' a Dukes of Hazzard themed museum owned by Ben 'Cooter' Jones.  We were in for a Dukes of Hazzard related treat.  On arrival we discovered none other than Rick 'Deputy Cletus' Hogg was making a personal appearance.

Deputy Cletus
Despite expecting him to be exactly like the onscreen character he had not played for almost four decades he was in fact a delightfully erudite chap who was keen to talk about his love of British comedy and his friendship with Lovejoy (and some other stuff) creator Ian La Frenais.  Following meeting the great man we also got a quick selfie with the other star of the show......

Next we were lucky enough to spot a live band playing at a nearby bar and beyond that a car show, finally the holiday was going my way.  The car show included the car from hit TV show the Munsters (not shown) and a coffin car signed by someone from the Munsters.

They were Munsters crazy.  Following on from the car show it was time to visit another shopping mall for some last minute consumerism before heading to the airport.  I tried to do a jump on the way into the rental car return centre by way of a Dukes of Hazzard tribute but I think the sheer mass of the Yukon just dented the concrete road surface and bad a hell of a noise.  It was time to say good by to our holiday wheels:

farewell Yukon, you have been amazing
And that brings us up to date and to the end of the trip, unless I write an epiblog tomorrow.  It has been a fantastic week away and really nice to spend time with my family without their annoying spouses and children (only joking, love them all really.)  Back to reality and work Tuesday.
