Torsdag - take it to the bridge

When I last posted we were just enjoying a delicious breakfast in the red light area of some town in Germany.   By this time we had established a crew rotation of 3 hours sleep, 3 hours driving then 3 hours as driver's mate.  This allowed a 33.33333% sleep ratio, which is infinitely palindromic so pleased me a great deal.  The sleeping quarters were formed by collapsing the dining room table into a well upholstered bed, it was bit like trying to sleep on an active bouncy castle that smelt of ass.

One of many naps I enjoyed today.  Looks comfy.  Wasn't.

Driving the vans on full throttle everywhere has not been without penalty, mainly in the form of poor fuel consumption.  This necessitated frequent fuel stops.  This need not have been a problem but for the fact every single garage had a different payment system either requiring payment in the kiosk, payment at a local terminal, pre-payment or post-payment.  This lack of consistency is a real world example of why the economies of Europe are such a mess.

One of many tiring and confusing fuel stops

Navigation was managed by picking a few key cities and heading vaguely toward them.  It worked reasonably well.  The chaps in our sister motorhome got confused at one point as they kept seeing signs for the German town of Arsefart yet never seemed to reach it.  Traffic through most of Germany was not so bad apart from Hamburg where we were hit by a bit of rush hour traffic and 50km of roadworks.

Following Germany we arrived in Denmark, my fact checking showed me that the country was founded in 1984 by Dirty Den from Eastenders and Mark Hammil from Star Wars, both at the peak of their fame.  They tossed a coin and decided on the portmantau of MarkDen, sadly the fax transmitting the name to the Atlas printers got garbled and so Denmark was born.  Other spectacular sights in Denmark included the bridge between Copenhagen and Sweden which features in the TV programme 'the bridge' I would say more about it but I slept through the entire nation.

A bridge in Denmark, but not the bridge

In Sweden we adopted school trip behaviour when visiting a new country by eschewing local dining options and going to Pizza Hut.  It was exactly the same as any other Pizza hut but with greater choices when it came to Lingenberry based beverages and the interesting option of liquorice sprinkles on the ice cream.  They also had an interesting sign.

An interesting choice of toppings

It may not be obvious just yet but I am somewhat struggling to think of things to write about today as I have either been asleep or driving along relatively samey roads.  Main highlights have been the number of Swedish signs and brands that sound a bit like rude words a selection of which follows:

some of the words are anagrams of the English equivalent

Caught Dan in the adult section again

grow up.

The day was rounded off by a delicious serving of tuna pasta made by Jon, then not more than two beers each before an early night.  I also hope to walk into the local town to take some more childish pictures.

Tomorrow the plan is to sit around all day then we start the big ride at 20:30.....
